taste

Language allows us to describe and communicate taste experiences. These words are part of our shared linguistic heritage and serve as tools to express our sensory perceptions. In German, there are four (or five) key words used to describe taste: bitter, salty, sour, and sweet. The fifth term, umami, has only recently been adopted into common usage. To give these abstract words a physical form, I first developed a grid system. Within this grid, each taste was represented by an interplay of lines, some adhering to the structure, others breaking free from it. The character of this interplay was based on my own subjective perception. The forms were then translated into three-dimensional graphics. These visuals were separated into their individual color channels and brought back together through riso printing. The result is a booklet that showcases a wide range of explorations on the theme of taste.
